I’m off to TCAF! It occurs to me that I don’t think I’ve ever FLOWN to TCAF, despite having gone for nearly 10 years. Who can pass up the 8 hour drive and harrowing car search at the border? Me apparently, this year!

When my book dropped on the NYT bestsellers list after 2 weeks running, my dad ordered 14 copies online. I told him that I didn’t think that was how it worked, but I stand corrected because I’m back up this week! Yay Relish for 3 weeks on the NYT bestsellers list!

I am gonna be at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival this weekend!

These four cartoonists tell the most personal kind of stories – stories from their own lives. This program explores what’s involved in memoir. Finally posting the photobooth photos from Drink and Draw Like a Lady 2013!

This was a really fun party, with tons of amazing, brilliant, talented ladies.

I love these photos! Everyone happy and clowning around for the camera. Photobooth photos are some of my favorite kind, because it allows the gaze of the camera to be controlled by the subject in a way that claims the image as a self-portrait.

Relatedly, women who make comics sometimes are placed behind a lense of gender, and that’s where marginalization can occur. Having this party— this celebration and opportunity to chat and feel together— by women and for women, is an important part of what I love about comics.

I was so pleased to chat and laugh among these talented and interesting ladies, and I hope to see you all again in the years to come!

So, until recently (as in maybe three weeks ago) I would never have considered myself a cosplayer. I mean, sure, I’ve gone to every single Harry Potter movie opening in variously themed garb - hufflepuff house robes with hand embroidered crest and hand knit scarf; one time as The Gray Lady, etc - but cosplay always seemed foreign to me.

ENTER SHERLOCK FANDOM. As in… then I entered the Sherlock Fandom. It’s my first real fandom- my first time experiencing the community. Which is so awesome.

And all of a sudden, the knowledge that MY John wouldn’t be at 221b con was totally unacceptable! So, with the modicum of free time we had together while Lucy was in town the week before the convention… We endeavored upon a COSPLAY CHALLENGE:

The Burrow Studio lives on!

I will play dressup with Nora basically any time. Nerdy gender-bent dress up with props that allow me to be macho with a spray painted squirt gun? ALL THE BETTER. Nora was speaking on a panel on how to cosplay on a budget, so we though it would be good to put her to the test.

I was in Chicago for like 48 hours during my book tour, and somehow 6 of those hours were spent doing this.

Behold THE INFINITE CORPSE, a jam comic started in secret over a year ago by Aaron Renier, Nate Beaty and the other cartoonists of Chicago’s comics collective Trubble Club. Based on a combination of Raw’s Narrative Corpse project and Scott McCloud’s idea of the “infinite canvas,” it’s a kind of exquisite corpse comic focused around the skeleton Corpsey. There are already 200+ cartoonists who’ve participated (Art Spiegelman, Alison Bechdel, Pen Ward, Carol Tyler, Ivan Brunetti, Lilli Carré etc etc etc) and now it is open to everyone. So go, read! The event last night at Housingworks was really fun, and I got to try a new cocktail! I met C. Bay, and he took my photo (see above) with his cool polaroid land camera. Also I got my hair cut so I don’t look like a sheepdog for once! All in all a very nice evening.

Oh Joy, Sex Toy is my latest project; a celebration of fornication with a weekly review of sex toys or coverage of events relating to everything in the wonderful world of sex!

It strives to be relevant to all genders, anatomies and sexualities with guest interviewers who posses the body parts, knowledge and experiences that I may not personally possess.

My last tour journal for the time being. Raccoon eyes!

The answer was: both.

Yes, that was exhausting, but it was also amazing. I still have a lot more events and cool stuff and adventures to have with Relish!

I’m so pleased with this book, and the great meals I had on the road, and restaurant recommendations from readers, and incredible interactions I had with people who’ve been touched by my work. This was such an indescribably huge reward for me for the hard work I did on Relish, to meet you guys and shake your hands and see my book in the hands that I shook.

Really really rad.

Tour journal #2. This one was a little less thrilling, but still a moment that made me think.

Day of Silence is a movement to call attention to the silencing of LGBT kids, especially due to and in the face of bullying and harassment. It’s more important than ever, to call attention to the conditions of bullied youth, but it’s always important to do more.

My next book will focus on my high school experiences— with bullying and confusion and all the rest. It’s also about the importance of art education in saving kids like me from falling through the cracks. I’m really excited to get started on this story. You can read a little more about this new project here!

Anyway, I’ve been thinking about this stuff lately and this was a moment that, for me, drove home how high school is terrifying and insane, and that 10 years out, I still have to traverse the pitfalls now and then.

I still have a bunch more events on my book tour, but the big long travel finished up late last night! My apartment and I were reunited and then I slept for 14 hours.

It was an incredible trip! I got to meet amazing people, wonderful readers and artists, I ate good food, saw new sights, and travelled and did readings and taught workshops every day until I dropped!

I didn’t have the time or energy to do much work while I was on the road, but I did make a couple of little tour journals. Here’s one!

Did you guys know that RELISH is on the NYT bestseller list now? Crazy amazing.
